The Unobserved

Some time ago, my oldest and closest friend suggested that I should start this blog.

I suspect he had simply grown tired of listening to my endless theories about human behaviour and quantum physics and decided it would be much more efficient if I found other people to bore instead.

So, dear reader, apparently that person is now you.

Welcome to The Unobserved.

The idea behind this blog is quite simple.

I will take emotions, feelings and human attitudes — courage, anger, sadness, fear, jealousy, loyalty, selfishness, love, and whatever else happens to catch my attention — and look at them through concepts borrowed from quantum physics.

Not because there is scientific evidence that our emotions obey quantum mechanics.

There isn't.

And I have no intention of pretending otherwise.

What fascinates me is something much simpler.

Human emotions are extraordinarily difficult to understand from the inside. They are abstract, messy and sometimes completely irrational. Quantum physics, on the other hand, is scientifically rigorous, yet many of its concepts are deeply counterintuitive.

There is something strangely fascinating about placing the two beside each other.

Sometimes, rationalising something as intangible as an emotion through an equally strange — but scientifically defined — concept gives us enough distance to look at ourselves differently.

Not to explain ourselves through physics.

To observe ourselves.

Perhaps understanding what happens inside us from another perspective can help us understand our emotions a little better — and, hopefully, manage them in a healthier way.

At least, that is the experiment.

And since experiments become more interesting when you don't control every variable, I would like you to interfere with this one.

If there is an emotion, feeling or attitude you would like me to explore through the lens of quantum physics, send me the word at theunobserved7@gmail.com.

Just the word.

I will read your suggestions and use whatever scientific creativity I possess to find a connection worth exploring. If I find one, perhaps I will write a post dedicated to it.

It also makes this considerably more entertaining for me.

There is only one rule.

Please don't send me your entire life story.

I am not a therapist, psychologist, life coach, spiritual guide, or anything remotely similar.

And, to be completely honest, I have developed a remarkably efficient ability to ignore things very quickly.

Some of you probably already know that. ;)

Now, there is another reason this blog exists.

I have never quite understood human beings.

It saddens me to think that so much beauty can exist hidden within us, and yet we can be so hypocritical, cowardly, selfish, afraid… and a thousand other things we would rather not admit.

We live as though we were constantly being observed.

And I find that fascinating.

How much of what we do belongs genuinely to us?

How much belongs to the people watching?

Why do we choose to do the things we do? Do we really do them for others… or, somewhere beneath it all, do we do them for ourselves?

In the quantum world, observing is not always an innocent act. A measurement can change the very thing we are trying to understand.

Sometimes I wonder if we are so different.

Perhaps there are parts of us that only reveal themselves when no one is looking.

And that is where The Unobserved truly begins.

So, dear reader, before we start, I leave you with one question:

Who are you when no one is watching?
